26 January 2011: SAVE OUR FORESTS

So now our Government intends to sell off the Forestry Commission forests to the private sector. Shock horror…why oh why can’t they leave things alone at times ... we've already lost all our local post offices despite assurances that a service would be protected. My nearest post office is about ten miles away, and even the local shop cannot sell me a postage stamp. So how can I possibly trust these politicians? So what in earth are you going to leave for the next generations? Concrete and more concrete? No understanding of nature?

We feel that we are pushed into a 'box' every day, home, tube or car, office oh yes and the supermarket...'boxes' all around us. Forests are there for the benefit of us all - all creatures great and small - they bring us closer to nature, they provide us with fresh air and reinvigorate us through exercise. We are in danger of losing all of this just for the sake of making a quick buck . Short term. So what will be left for the future? A loss of our understanding of common sense, rationality, nature and other creatures? And what example do we lead for other countries? Why should the other countries save their forest...well you sold yours?... overfished and poisoned seas, creatures of all kind killed for money... I'm ashamed, very ashamed for the so called homo sapiens (Latin for "wise man" or "knowing man"). We are supposed to be the clever ones. Hmmm.

Please, please help us to prevent the sell off of the Forestry Commission forests by joining one of the campaigns in England. Check out our local campaign at www.savelakelandsforests.org.uk, sign the petition, write to your MP, or if you are local, come along and add your voice at Grizedale this Sunday (30 January). It's never too late!

Images of some of our beautiful local woodlands; especially 'wild' Ennerdale. If this one is sold off who will invest in maintaining it as the beautiful wilderness the Forestry Commission have created? As well as the larger forests such as Whinlatter and Grizedale with fantastic visitor facilities there are many more Forestry Commission woods here including Blengdale, one of the last refuges of the red squirrel, Chapel Wood, Lowther Park and so on. All of them well used by familiies and outdoor enthusiasts alike and all a haven for nature.

PS. did you know that the work of the Forestry Commission costs less than a second class stamp per person per year?

As a Fashion Designer working here in the Lakes I find this action both shocking and disturbing. We are all trying to make cutbacks in our life, and to tighten our belts as best as we can, but this is ridiculous. Who is really trying to get their grubby paws on this wood 'land'? Surely there must be a 'fat cat' behind all this pulling the 'right' strings. I wonder what can we sell, they will have thought, or more accurately what is there left to sell? ... Oh! I know the Forest(s).

From the point of view of a business woman, selling off a profitable business doesn't make sense unless you retire, and as an artist I'm very afraid that the creativity in this country would soon disappear if access to the beauty of the countryside was ever more restricted. I regularly wander into our local Forestry Commission wood to seek ideas - the frost and the silence in the winter, the bluebells in the spring, and the rustle of leaves and colours in the autumn. These are irreplaceable, and they are experiences that should be availble to all, and not only through a TV screen! Anyone who knows what was the inspiration behind 'Arts and Crafts' movement put your hand up?

25 January 2011: BIG FAT GYPSY WEDDING

For the last couple of weeks, every Tuesday I’m absolutely mesmerised with Channel 4’s documentary about gypsies’ weddings and communions….and of course with the dresses. I have to admit I have never ever seen anything like it in my life. No, sorry I’m lying, I have. Disney’s princesses. Big, no, massive dresses, to be exact 14 STONE dresses. 14 stone shocking pink marshmallows with flapping butterflies, glitter, crystals, flowers and wait for it…lights, yes lights under the skirt. Can you believe it…no of course not, I didn’t :)) ... and the dressmaker was standing by with a fire extinguisher, just in case!

I like and respect traditions, any tradition as long as they don’t take advantage of anybody and it is everybody’s right to keep their traditions alive as long as nobody’s hurt. I suppose they probably find amusing, pointless and ridiculous things we do, like working independent women.. but I still don't get these dresses. To me a dress is supposed to flatter you, however wacky it may be, but these brides just seem to be lost in acres of tulle or organza!

24 January 2011: FOOTBALL COMMENTATORS - SEXISM

How to shoot yourself in the foot? Well to start with you have to be a male, a well known Sky commentator and then you have to comment ona footie and then make silly comments about the side referee who’s a female with your colleague. Hope you’ve got it. And yes he got sacked. Ahhh! Breaks my heart it does.

I love it when a thing like that comes alight…but you see all boys think that the footie is theirs and girls are not aloud to enjoy it or watch it or wear it. And this brings back my experience with sport commentators. A year ago at BBC Radio Cumbria a local sports presenter took the micky and laughed at my idea…we don’t need ladies fan wear? What for?? He didn't realise I could hear him either! Sad sad little people, it’s all I can say, sad in they little pointless life. And then there was Chelsea who tried everything to stop me exhibiting a 'blue' dress ... come on guys, grow up and stop throwing your toys out of the pram. It's the 21st Century! Oh! and guess what West Ham thinks it’s a brill idea… but they do have Karren Brady, and female directors . How refreshing!

Check out the following BBC report: Is Sexism still rife in Football?

12 January 2011: PROS & CONS

What can I write about now, at the beginning of 2011? Last year at this time I was celebrating the end of a very difficult year. Everybody was saying it could only get better. This year they are saying it can only get worse so what is going on? So, I could make comments about all this doom and gloom? People loosing their jobs? VAT up to 20 per cent? Silk prices going up and up? No you can find all that out for yourself just by reading the headlines ... and I'm sure you've had enough of it by now anyway, just like me!.

To be honest I have no idea… it's that time of year when any animal with any sense hibernates! What I do know is that with all this doom and gloom I have to keep on a straight line and going with what I know best, i.e. making dresses and pushing my BUTiQ and my label. So, why should you buy a bespoke from me? Well let me tell you ...

1. you will get a personal service, personal advice regarding fabric, colours, cut…etc
2. to own something designed ONLY for yourself that nobody else has (no danger of going to a wedding and seeing somebody else wearing the same dress, not even in the different colour)
3. label with reputation for being unique, different, innovative and high quality
4. competitive prices
5. guarantee that the outfits will fit you like a glove
6. no shop assistant who doesn’t care and lies to you only to sell
7. nobody’s exploited, only myself if you count me burbning the midnight oil ))
8. support local economy
9. all fabrics are locally sourced (where possible)
10. in one word ethical
11. all garment are designed and produced by me.
12. High quality and made to last

On the other hand if you are a busy bee with no time for the personal touch then you can always have a look directly on my BUTiQ. The only thing you have to remember is that if sizes do not quite match you I can help. And even these designs are hand-made-to-measure in very limited editions (maximum of 25). No many shops can say that can they?.

Now let’s see what alternatives are out there

High Street (I know, not all but the majority)

1. cheap
2. low quality
3. cant say they fit properly and you always have to compromise because they are cheap
4. thousands of similar designs (danger of wearing the same dress like thousands of people oh yuk!!. The sameness reminds me of George Orwell’s 1984)
5. no support for local economy (and they don't care either)
6. exploiting children as young as 7 with or without knowledge in the world’s poorest countries
7. mentality of ‘ Sell, sell, sell’

Celebrities turned ‘designer’, oh how I love this subject.
1. exorbitant prices, you are actually buying the name. So you have to pay thousands for the privilege
2. maybe not thousands of copies but hundreds
3. lack of creativity (see some designs…not very exciting) but you have to buy it because you have the ‘name’
4. no support for local economy (they just get richer and richer in most cases)
5. makes you wonder where are all made and at what cost (couldn’t find anything about were VB’s factory is for example)
6. and do you really think most of these celebrities actually design the dress you end up buying?

Let me know about the above subject. ))
Happy New Year 2011.

23 December 2010: SENSE OF FASHION

This is another e-boutique for new designers, much more comprehensive then Fashion Killerz and internationally focused. Best descrived at the Marketplace for Fashion. Rather good …had no idea to be honest that they are such nice shops like this around …just search and you can pick what suits you best or what market you’re looking for. Check out: www.senseofashion.com/angymorton

In addition to these online boutiques you can also check out my BUTiQ for the latest designs, and from time to also EBay.

21 December 2010: FASHION KILLERZ

At LFW in September I met Michele who was collecting and meeting new designers for her new online boutique - Fashion Killerz’ - such an unforgettable name. I already have a few of my dresses on her shop…well why not; I will give it a go see how it works. It is actually a very good platform for new designers to sell your creations so click here ito take a look: www.fashionkillerz.com

19 December 2010: SNOWBOUND

Reading the news you would imagine all of Britain was completely gridlocked. Looking at the pictures from Heathrow and hearing some of the stories about grounded planes, cancelled flights and closed motorways. I am sure some parts such as the South-East are. Here we have had some snow but much as melted. However, the snow we had has frozen so there have been heavy frosts and black ice.

However, there is a positive side - inspirational landscapes! Here are a few pictiures taken during a walk up to High Dam on my wedding anniversary, and then of the 'Santa train' at the weekend - by Sunday we had blue skies and intense colours ... fantastic! We are in for a very quiet (when not working) Christmas ... an 'Austerity Christmas' as some people have been calling it. So time to batten down the hatches and make the most of what is out there, on the doorstep!

3 December 2010: REDDRESSBLACKDRESS

With Christmas just around the corner take a look at my latest 'classic; made-to-measure, designer dresses - my brand new
REDDRESSBLACKDRESS concept collection.

At this time of the year it is usually very quiet in the fashion world. There is rarely much to report other than the LBD (little black dress) creeps up again now and then. As we girls all know it is unthinkable to have a wardrobe without at least one LBD.... so there you are I have decided to come up with few simple ideas, equally suitable for the office, shopping or for an evening meal or drink, a function or a night at the theatre. LBD's are for those days when decisions on what to wear go out the window.

I have extended the theme to include my RED DRESS concept. The same, simple designs in scarlet taffeta, perfect for the Christmas party. Perfect for Valentine's day. A dress to turn heads wherever you wear it,

So check out
www.angymorton.co.uk for my latest range of REDDRESSBLACKDRESS themes starting with my classic LBD with a twist - 'BLACK DRESS' - a beautiful sleeveless taffeta dress with low cut back and an oversized double crepe collar. This is also available as RED DRESS.

REDDRESSBLACKDRESS

All the dresses in this collection are hand-made by myself so if I don't have your size in stock don't despair, your made-to-measure LBD will be created specially for you. All designs are limited to a maximum production of just 25 dresses - unlike the thousands upon thousands of so-called designer dresses msdd-produced in Asia and churned out by the High Street, In addition all of my dresses are of the highest quality and are made to last. And with prices from just £ 295.00 until the end of February, there hasn't been a better time to treat yourself to something truly personal.

The 'hand-made' range will be available from my new online BUTiQ and exclusive runs of 'prêt-à-porter' designs from select boutiques or online.
