26 August, 2011: A DAY AT THE RACES Here is a provisional selection of photos from the Charity Race Night at Cartmel yesterday. As you can see the weather was excellent once more! I will be posting a full report and photo galleries from both this event and from the REDDRESS:BLACKDRESS fashion shoot, very soon. Meanwhile a big thank you to all the girls that helped out - they were magnificent! Also for Tracy Wells for the hats, Mike Kells the photographer, and to Lorraine from St.Mary's Hospice for putting on the event. They had raised over £ 4000 for the hospice when I last heard from her - a fantastic achievement! |

23 August, 2011: RED DRESS - BLACK DRESS FASHION SHOOT AT HAIG COLLIERY After two weeks of postponing the date for various reasons, we finally pulled off the Red Dress: Black Dress fashion photo shoot. The biggest problem is probably pulling together people over a distance - the venue was West Cumbria, the models were from Carlisle, and of course I had to travel up from the far south of the county. Even the the scheduled start time of 9am became 10am due to train timetables. In the end we couldn't have been luckier with the day - our first choice of dates would have been a washout, while yesterday was one of the nicest days of the summer, sandwiched between days of grey skies and rain. Perhaps my luck is finally turning? In the end Border TV couldn't send a crew, so despite having to work within a window set by train times There was no pressure, A quick coffee, a chat with the models and on with Michelle's make-up. I was more bothered about getting the make-up right, than adding a couple of final details to my new design - Ladysmith ... there was time, wasn't there? But life is never that simple, is it? Moments later Mike was asking when the first girl would be ready - the press had turned up! It was Mike McKenzie from the Whitehaven News who is putting together a feature about the plans for the new visitors centre at the Haig Pit. He already knew what he wanted as the page has been planned out, so there was time while he nosed around for suitable locations with the other photographers, Brain Sherwen and Wayne Preston. So in the end they took over and I took a sort of back seat, doing hair and make-up, finishing a dress and checking from time to time that all was going to plan.

With such good photographers and models, an amazing location, and my wacky designs you just couldn't go wrong! Haig Colliery Mining Museum is such a wonderful location for a gritty fashion shoot - the roughness of industry, the coldness of Iron, and the hardships of coal mining all in one place. Everywhere you turn there is a potential photograph. We used the engine rooms in the winding house for most of the shots, but also staged a few outside with the winding gear. There was so much potential that in the end we ran out of time. We had planned to take a few down on the beach among the ruins of the old Saltom Pit - another time perhaps! |

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The dresses that were used in this fashion shoot are one-off couture designs made mainly from recycled fabrics such as jackets, skirts and even curtains. This part of my Red Dress:Black Collection is inspired by, and dedicated, to the industrial heritage of iron and coal in West Cumbria. As with many of my designs, the dresses are characters which all tell a story: Wellington 1910 commemorates the worst disaster in the West Cumberland coal field. Like some of the other Whitehaven mines, the workings extended far out beneath the Irish Sea. The Wellington Pit was well known for its methane or firedamp. In 1910 an explosion and fire resulted in 136 deaths. The forget-me-nots are a tribute to the 1700 men, women and children that lost their lives winning coal in the Whitehaven area. Florence No.2 is named after the Florence No.2 in Egremont, which was Europe's last working iron ore mine, producing very high grade ore. The mine and herirtage centre recently closed. A sad loss. This one was inspired by a journey down into the mine a few years ago. Ladysmith was another colliery located on the clifftop above Whitehaven. After closure of the mine, coal from Haig was transported up to Ladysmith by an industrial railway where the coal was cleaned of stone and rock at the washery. The rails, the coal dust and the washing of the coal are represented on this dress. Montreal No.4 at Cleator Moor became famous when both iron ore and coal were brought up the same shaft. The town was honeycombed by iron ore mine workings close to the surface. It is said that miners working in some of the tunnels could hear the Montreal School clock striking the hour. I also have designs for two further themed dresses, Wyndham No.3, named after one of the most important of the Egremont ore mines, and Haig Pit itself, which was the last working coal mine in Cumbria and had tunnels that stretched four miles out under the Irish Sea! |

However, any credit should go to Pamela Telford, the manager of the museum, who is an unsung hero. She may be quiet but she relentlessly fights like a tiger to preserve the heritage of Haig Pit, and the amazing tales and stories of coal mining in West Cumbria, against all odds and numerous setbacks. I think any normal person would have given up years ago, but not Pamela. The proposals to refurbish the museum and provide a visitors centre are fantastic - I sincerely hope that she is able to raise the funds as it would be a disaster if such an opportunity is lost. They have already lost the proposed railway that would have run along the cliff top, providing a link to the museum from the harbour. It was to have followed the path of the industrial line which connected the docks with Haig Pit and Ladysmith where the coal was 'washed'. Just imagine it - riding through flower-filled meadows with views over the cliffs and sea to St Bees Head, the Isle of Man and Scotland. And of course the Florence Iron Mine and hertage centre has also been lost - what a terrible waste! I went down that mine a few years ago and it certainly opened my eyes. So, that is why I organised the shoot and created these couture dresses. I wanted to offer some support in the only way I know how, and perhaps when people see the photos they will take note and perhaps see everything in a different light ... a bit of glitz and glamour at the heart of our industrial heritage! Do if you haven't been to Haig Pit, get along there now, take a look at the plans and offer your support ... and just in case you are wondering how much it costs to get in ... Nothing! You can't get better value than that. But that is no excuse for not leaving a donation. |

'Ladysmith' modelled by Natasha Lawrence; 'Florence No.2' and 'Montreal No.4' modelled by Michelle Serrechia Anyway, the day was a huge success, everybody worked hard and professionally, but also had a lot of fun. Check out the pictures here which are just a few preliminary shots taken by my hubby. Can't wait to see the professional images from Brian, Mike and Wayne. It is very difficult to pick out anybody in particular but I must so I was so impressed with both Michelle and Natasha, the models. I worked with them at Whitehaven Festival, and with Michelle also with the alternative Royal wedding shoot back in April. They are both local girls, they look fantastic, have great attitude and personality and work so well together. Even the photographers were impressed! It just shows, as I told a reporter today, you just don't realise what talent you have on your doorstep - never mond potential locations for such fantastoc shots. Anyway a huge, huge thank you to Michelle Serrechia and Natasha Lawrence, Brian Sherwen, Mike McKenzie and Wayne Preston, and of coursePamela Telford! I'll post more images in due course. In the meantime, check out next week's Whitehaven News, and if you are ever in West Cumbria make a detour up to the Haig Colliery Mining Museum. |

20 August, 2011: RHYTHMATIC I have just seen a fantastic live band called Rhythmatic, at a wedding. Ive seen quite few bands at weddings and in my book, most are pretty average. So based on that idea, I didnt go over to the marquee to check them out until Mike came over and said they were very good. My problem is that I expect everybody involved in any form of art to be just as much a perfectionist as I am and because of that Im often disappointed. I didnt fail to make the sarcastic observation, a band, really? What? Another one - but I have to say I was wrong this time and Mike was right. They were/are good young different, vibrant and creative. And that is what I like most ... CREATIVE! The solo artist (s) could actually sing and hold a note)). No screeching or out of synch, just great, tight team work. The vocalists are Lorna Muir and Seb Forrest. Lorna has a very soul kind of voice, with a great Scottish accent you know what I mean a bit like Amy MacDonald meets Amy Winehouse and Duffy, yet totally different too! Seb is very Motown. Songs that included Valerie from Amy Winehouse, Good Times Chic (plenty of Nile Rodgets influence too), Greatest Day - Take That, Saw Her Standing There - The Beatles are not easy to sing without sounding a la karaoke but these guys know their onions. I look forward to hearing some of their own material in the future, though at the moment they are working hard on the wedding and functions circuit to make a living. They all studied at Leeds Collage of Music and come from different parts of the country. Lorna Scotland, Seb south somewhere, James Geordie ehe good man! - Bruno London, and I should have asked the other two guys where they are from, Dan and Henry. Mind you doesnt matter at all only what you do does. ... and to do it well. So yes, a good band; if youre getting married and you need a good soundtrack that will get everybody (and I mean everybody) on the dance floor, I can highly recommend Rhythmatic - you wont be disappointed. 14 August, 2011: CARTMEL RACES - CHARITY RACE NIGHT & FASHION SHOW - UPDATE I have had a couple of meetings with Lorraine from St Mary's Hospice at Ulverston regarding the Charity Race Night at Cartmel Racecourse. The show kicks off on the Thurrsday afternoon with a charity luncheon. There will be a fashion show held in the 'Belles & Beaus' enclosure of the paddock during the afternoon during which I will be exhibiting many of my designs from Stolen Dreams, Pyromania, Red Dress:Black Dress and Austerity, weather permitting of course. This could last for up to an hour. I am not sure what theh plan is yet if will rain as I will not be risking silk couture gowns in the rain! The original plan was for the girls to be milling around the banqueting suite so I guess we will have to see, In addition to my dress designs there will be hats provided by Tracy Wells (see previous blog). For full details of the racing programme see the link for Cartmel Races at the top of the page. The good news is that all proceeds of the event will be going to St Mary's Hospice in Ulverston, a very worthwhile local cause. St Mary's Hospice in Ulverston is an independent, charitable, voluntary body funded mainly by the generosity of the community for the community. Founded in 1989 by public subscription, the hospice provides specialised medical and nursing care to people from South Cumbria suffering from serious progressive illnesses. The hospice building is a late Victorian house with an added extension, set in tranquil and beautiful gardens. 2 August, 2011: WHITE WEDDING Ahh now then, this is a very interesting subject. Wouldnt you say? I do. A wedding is the in which two people are united in or a similar institution. Wedding traditions and customs vary greatly between , , , , and . Most wedding ceremonies involve an exchange of by the couple, presentation of a gift (offering, ring(s), symbolic item, flowers, money), and a public proclamation of marriage by an authority figure or leader. Special wedding garments are often worn, and the ceremony is sometimes followed by a . Music, poetry, prayers or readings from or literature are also commonly incorporated into the ceremony. (Wikipedia - wedding) Lets start with one the least known facts the white wedding dress was popularized by Queen Victoria in marrying her Prince Albert in 1840. White dresses were very unusual until then due to impracticalities they were difficult to clean and to keep white, also they could get dirty much quicker then a darker velvet dress. Victorias choice of white gown was seen as an unusual choice at that time. Some say it was eccentricity some say a sign of purity. I say that the dress bought a change, simplicity, less clutter - and above all style, a style that changed everything and one that has survived to this day. Eighteenth century wedding dresses were colourful and heavily embellished (one of my friends favourite words creeps into my mind here: lush - thanks Leah ) - pearls and diamonds, roses and lace all in one. Vivid colours were a must, shades of red and blues, purple and gold. Even black! If you think that getting married and chasing after a wedding dress is difficult today, think about if you were to get married then. You would have to prepare for it from the age of five! So, why am I bringing the subject of weddings? Not only because I make lovely and unusual wedding dresses), but but because Ive been doing a few waitressing stints at wedding functions to keep my business afloat in these difficult times, and of course, because I find it interesting. However, my sense of observation is driving me mad especially in my department, clothes. Im not criticizing anybodys style, we are all different in our choice, shape and size but when you see no style at all and that I cant be bothered attitude, its worrying. So, so far Ive seen all the following at wedding receptions - jeans, track suits, trainers and pièce de résistance - flip flops! What am I going to see next week? A towel wrap as a dress? Dont get me wrong I have also seen some very nice dresses and well dressed ladies and very smart gents. By doing this job Im also kind of networking if you like. Like last week I met the general manager of Eden Lodge in Ulverston, Keith Parr - A lovely man, and a lovely team. The advantage of working in a hotel under these circumstances is that I sometimes establish a future collaboration. In this case, the hotel is set in fantastic grounds, and we could arrange a photo-shoot to promote the hotel and my dresses. In the case of Eden Lodge I will be exhibiting there at a wedding fair in September watch this space, and in the meantime check out their excellent website: www.eden-lodge.com Other places I have helped out recently have included the Windermere Motor Yacht Club a fabulous arts and crafts house designed by Voysey which overlooks the lake. An episode of Agatha Christies Poirot was filmed there - again lovely people, and a fantastic venue for a wedding or for a photo shoot. Of course, the Lake District is a perfect wedding venue, having inspired generations of romantic poets, writers and artists. For more information and ideas you could also check out Weddings in Cumbria. Oh and if you are getting married and you need a fantastic wedding dress or anything else to wear similarly fantastic dont forget to call me! |

25 July, 2011: A WALK TO THE BEACH As all my friends know I was a professional swimmer for a number of years so for me water in any form pool, sea, and ocean is an attraction. So when Mike suggested going out this weekend my mind was beach, beach, and beach, followed quite naturally by sea, ice cream, sun, sand and then laziness. But, and a huge but it suddenly hit me, I forgot that I had promised my body a long walk to shake off the cobwebs. So, armed with sandwiches, coffee and other bits and pieces we set off over the sand dunes. |

Have I mentioned before that I prefer the west coast in the summer? Its much more peaceful, and a million times friendlier than the congested South Lakes? Living in the Windermere area can be very frustrating at times; crowded, noisy and very rarely do people stop and talk to each other. Whereas in West Cumbria you still have a community. It isnt all holiday and second homes, and casual workers and tourists. People know each other, help each other and you dont have that suspicious look if youre talking to a child like I experienced in our park. I stopped to speak to what I thought was a lost child. But unknown to me the mother wasnt far away, and was furious that I had approached her son. She met me with what do you think youre doing screamed at me drooling like a bulldog with a London accent (and you wonder why I won't live there?) The whole party looked at me like I was a thief. Im sorry, I was only asking if mummy or daddy was around. I was trying to help. The park is rather big for a three year old child; criss-crossed by paths. It is easy to get lost as an adult, never mind a kid. But it seems I was in the wrong. I was advised by an elderly couple that you cant do that, not anymore, not in the 21st century. Im sorry but whats wrong with this people
to feel somethings wrong and not be able to ask that crying and lost child if hes ok? Are we not humans? Are we not supposed to care? I apologised, thinking what in earth have I done wrong? Anybody would have done the same. Wouldnt they?
Well, apparently not. What was even more shocking for me was that I am a woman with an obvious bump and like any mother out there my maternal instinct kicked in very quickly so my priority was to ensure that was child. Never mind eh we live and learn. |

So back to seaside we were up and down the sand dunes without a soul around. The sea on one side and the sharp mountains on the other, birds singing and hundreds of wild flowers it doesnt get better then that. It was a warm and breezy day but a bit too bright for my unprotected arms. Yes no sun cream, no hat, and no shade whatsoever. Shame on you BBC Weather forecast. Suppose to be sunny spells not a sunny day ... but then again its always wrong so I must admit we should have been prepared! We stopped to shade ourselves from the sun at one of my our favourite coffee stops, Spindlecraft at Drigg. I could have done with more of them excuses in our walk) I had a slice of coffee cake yummy and Mike had a toffee flapjack. As you can imagine they were home made. The most delicious cake - I could have munched all of it ). We could have done with a coffee stop every half an hour or so on that walk . but considering my luck, no way Pedro! |

Two hours later, shock horror we came across A BOG. No no no no, Im going back. Im going back. Im going back. So, I had to choose between going ahead or two hours back ahead it had to be My God it was terrifying. I tell you what; put me to choose between the dentists every day for the next year or cross a BOG once. You dont have to tell me! With a cold sweat on my spine, tears I couldnt help holding and a shaking body all over Mike helped me the other side. I dont understand why I behave like that but Im telling you it is scary. However, my senses came back and I started to enjoy my walk again. It was blissful, miles of country lanes and barely a soul around. And when we did meet people there was always a hello and a few nicities. The hedgerpws were absolutely full of flowers and we even walked through a meadow of my namesake - Angelica. Mike counted well over 100 species and that was without trying ... incedible. We also had a small picnic with a small mug of coffee and, by the time we reached the beach everything was aching. Back, hips, legs and above all my tummy if you would see me you would have thought I was 80. However I made it to the most beautiful beach ever. After 5 hours walk I could finally get my boots off and splash in the sea. It was splendid. I couldnt ask for more. |
