20 October 2011: SO-CALLED DESIGNER WEDDING DRESSES

Bad publicity is deadly for a family-run business.. No matter what kind of service you provide, bad reputation can destroy twenty years of hard work in seconds.

I have just read a story about a bridal shop that has received complaints from more than fifteen brides with regard to poor quality wedding dresses. I know the media can blow things out of proportion unfortunately in this case I think the reports are justified since the dresses in question cost thousands of pounds, and were labeled designer dresses! In one case the bride was cut short when both shoulder straps snapped before the reception started, another was damp and covered with foundation and make-up, while another bride suffered the embarrassment of the skirt unravelling during the wedding breakfast.

Of course problems with wedding dresses are nothing new. Plenty of people have come to me with dresses that have required repairing or adjusting, but in most cases they were off the peg dresses, sometimes mass-produced in China and poorly crafted or finished. However, what surprised me in this case, was that these were not only produced under a designer label, but the cost was the same or more than similar wedding designer dresses bought directly from a designer. Of course the other aspect that makes me laugh is that despite the designer label many of these dresses are still mass-produced and far from unique!


My own label wedding dresses are all UNIQUE, and are designed following consultations with the bride and are made to fit perfectly. Strapless A-line start from £750.00 excluding fabrics and trims, while I also make limited edition hand-made-to-measure dresses from £99.00 (see Austerity Collection: Bridal Bug).

7 October, 2011: NOT RESPONDING - R.I.P. STEVE JOBS (1955-2011)

This man changed our perceptive and view towards computers and, as far as I am concerned, he is a hero because something needed it to be done. The old grey box was overdue a revolutionary change and a new design. If you ever want a laugh just whisper 'Apple' when you are talking to one of the PC brigade … it will always get them going. They just don't get it as they plod on inventing more and more complex patches to repair ever more holes! Poor, disillusioned souls! And what do they always argue - 'everybody uses PCs, everybody uses Microsoft!" Baaaaa! I rest my case!

I first heard about ‘Apple’ when studying Norton Commander and DOS….LOL stone age ... but I never actually saw one until I met Mike. Prior to my married life, and as well as everything else I was doing, I worked as an operational manager for a US components manufacturer. I learned a lot about computers and how they work at that time ... as well as to despise them. The company I worked for was the main manufacturer in Eastern Europe of motherboards for Dell, and IBM, as well as producing mobiles for Sagem, Nokia , Motorola…etc.. etc. However, we only put them together because all the components were actually made in China. Yes, that’s new isn’t? Right as if.

There are a few episodes I remember with amusement. One of them was when all the screens in the office changed to bright blue – you should have heard the screams and shouts…soo funny. Another was the infamous millennium bug …panic panic as it was assumed that as we clicked into 2000 the computers would read it as 1900 and all the data would be wiped!. The financial dept were running round like headless chickens as you can imagine.

But perhaps most memorable were the explosions on the line. Dangerous? Well a bit, but nothing fatal. If I was fed up with paper work in the office - and believe me you do get blue in a place like that – I used to go on the line and help the guys at the repair dept. I had worked on the line for 6 months prior to the office job so I knew the work inside out. I was qualified you might say. We used to laugh when the motherboards exploded or the components melted. It was funny at the time, but now thinking about it, for the 50 people involved in that dept to find something like that funny, was actually very sad. Very much like Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Modern Times’….eh!

I suppose it goes with the job…)) ah now come to think of it…I shall make as Mike suggested a dress called NOT RESPONDING from the component parts of a PC. Yes, a trashy PC ... After all, Mac's don't 'not respond'!

The actual purpose of the shoot was to promote the Kells Modelling Competition 2011, as well as my new ready to wear collection ‘Austerity’. I don’t know why people are surprised to find that we have such fantastic talent nearby in Barrow-in-Furness; Mike Kells, the photographer, and Tracy Wells from Hatbox who designed the hats, for example. However, with Mike’s lens, my dresses, local, semi pro models and Tracy’s hats the results speak for themselves. Not bad, are they? Not bad at all.


29 September 2011: AUSTERITY - fashion shoot with Mike Kells

Just back from a fantastic photo shoot following a long week of intensive work to finish the first samples for my new collection, Austerity. The shoot was staged in Barrow-in-Furness where I wanted to make use of red brick to create an almost 50s or 60s backdrop – an ‘Austerity’ setting to contrast what is essentially, a vibrant, cheerful and ‘feel good’ collection, and a breath of fresh air amidst the endless gloom and doom, austerity and recession headlines we cannot escape these days! We found some excellent locations including between the bizarre tenement blocks on Barrow Island which were apparently constructed to make ship workers from Glasgow feel at home!

I have to laugh at snobbery and stereotypes from time to time. Our recent photo shoots have proved that you really don’t have to be in London to find talent, or to shoot in some lavish or exotic location, to achieve excellent results. Perhaps what is most satisfying is when somebody turns round and says – I didn’t know we could achieve that here! To which, all I can say is ‘open your eyes. It also speaks volumes of local talent and especially the professionalism I have been using recently – all of them local lasses! However, I think the biggest compliment I received this week was from a London stylist who, on discovering that Cumbria wasn’t a suburb of London, exclaimed, “So that is why your designs are so different!”

I found this shoot especially tiring which was perhaps no surprise after burning so much midnight oil. I can usually get on with work even if I am tired but it I could hardly keep my eyes open…never mind eh, it happens. The girls were as good as gold and under a watchful professional eye they gave all that could be given in a day’s work. Thanks again guys :) oh and more pics on the way :)

27 September 2011: TOP MODEL UK 2012- Michelle Serrechia?

As per usual Autumn brings even more activity to my small enterprise. There is always a surprise lurking round the corner, and no matter how big or small the challenge, it is always treated with equal importance.

So far for October, I have a fashion shoot, rehearsals for the Kells Modelling Competition 2011, samples of my new RTW collection ‘Austerity’ ready to hit the shops before Christmas and, fingers crossed a finalist Michelle Serrechia, to Top Model Worldwide organised by Top Model UK. And since I have agreed to sponsor Michelle, I’m looking sooooo forward to the result. If it’s a yes then, there are exciting times ahead and, if it’s a no, we can always try again next year ).

From the first time I worked with Michelle, on the Alternative Royal Wedding shoot back in April, I realised she has something special. I suppose Joint Honours Dance performance and Musical Theatre at may have helped. That’s why the moment I found out about the Top Model Worldwide competition I thought she would be perfect.

I believe Michelle has the qualities required for such a competition as you can see from our pictures. Yes, yes I’m trying very hard not to think about it ;-)). Not easy I can tell you. To have Cumbrian lass winning this damn thing will be absolutely brilliant….yes I know, I know - hold your horses Angy, but even to get through to the finals in London would be a fantastic achievement for her!

So a quick brief about the competition:

22 September 2011: LUCY, LADY DUFF-GORDON

Not many people know who the first internationally recognised, British fashion designer was…unless they have actually studied fashion.

Lady Duff Gordon or, ‘Lucile’ or ‘Lucy’ as she was known by the ‘society’ was one of the first leading international fashion designers, working the end of 19th to the early 20th century. Lucile started the business from home following a divorce and with no financial support, and a daughter to look after this must have been a truly daunting challenge in Victorian times. However, despite having no qualifications in dressmaking or tailoring she had an accurate eye and flair for fashion, and was driven by pure passion. By 1984 she had already opened Maison Lucile in Old Burlington Street in the heart of the fashionable West End.

Lucille brought innovative ideas in Fashion PR as well as in design, through her staged catwalks. The staged catwalk shows were unheard of before Lucile, theatrical, bold, shocking, and impressive, with goody bags, renowned customer service and VIP’s. And yes she is to be blamed, or applauded, for today’s catwalks. And, the ideas kept coming, for example, another interesting new idea for that time was her emotional collection. This comprised dresses with customised names inspired by literature, psychology, history and culture.

In fashion design Lucile is remembered for the free skirts – a slit skirt, and either a loose corset or no corset at all – rather radical in those days. She also brought in low necklines and trained her girls to be professional models rather than just pretty faces. By 1915 Lucile Ltd had show rooms in Paris, Chicago, New York as well as London.
She was very much a hands-on woman so nothing escaped her attention. Before long celebrities on both sides of the Atlantic sought her services and her travels lead to her boarding the ill-fated Titanic in 1912. Incredibly she survived.

Oh and let’s not forget that the tailored tweed suit was Lucile’s too. Coco Chanel may have developed the idea … but by then it wasn’t so radical.

12 September 2011: NY, LDN, MILAN AND PARIGI - FASHION WEEK(S)

What a year. We have had a tsunami, storms, hurricanes, oh and THAT Wedding! And, now we’re getting ready for Christmas…but before that let’s get our priorities right, FASHION.
The Fashion Weeks around the world start with the big Apple. The full schedule is ...

New York 8 - 15 of September
London 16 - 21 September
Milan 21 – 27 September
Paris 27 September – 5 October

… and if you are interested, Los Angeles 14-21 October, and then Tokyo 17-21 October.

There are at least 10 major Fashion Weeks around the World, twice a year … I can’t even begin to imagine what a stressful job a fashion editor must have. You have to view all shows like it or not, feeling with it or not - you don’t count. Only what you write counts. I have noticed recently that a lot of editors and fashion writers come up with good reviews even though you can clearly see that the collection(s) are rubbish. The risk of a bad review is far too high for them. If you write that it was rubbish then you can kiss goodbye to the next year’s invitation. And that is far more painful then writing the truth. In my world it’s called ‘telling the truth’.

Take Victoria Beckham for example – oh no! My invitation for next year!! Well never mind I will put my feet up with a cuppa instead This year is the second or the third collection she has made – sorry, it is not easy to keep up with boring people or their collections - and predictably the press has gone wild! You would think she is the next Coco bloody Chanel; how good and how inspirational and how she brought a breath of fresh air…and how this and how that…oh! Please. A person like that is an insult to all those entirely genuine creative minds around this country. There are thousands upon thousands of students finishing fashion every year and do you know where most of them usually end up…doing other jobs or assistants in High Street shops!

You could clearly see she had no idea about tailoring and designing from the beginning, because the designs all look amateurish. Thankfully this has not gone unnoticed by other, more important figures. A well known fashion writer for a well know news paper has been treated like an ‘inconvenience’ only because she wrote what she really thought about Victoria Beckham’s collection. Do you think that is blackmail? What is more amusing is that if you Google ‘Victoria Beckham 2012 collection review’ that article pops up first LOL. Before Style.com or even Vogue.com. Good one girl!! For more info

Anyway away from the bitchiness of fashion – even though I know you would prefer that than a boring review for 2012 So the style and look you’re going to wear next year as – I haven’t said ‘we’ because I’m not wearing anybody’s style but my own ;-)) - told by various fashion mags together with various bloggers and reviewers from NYFW. London Fashion Week started today so I can’t say much until that’s over …but for the mo 60’s survives well into the ’12, Bridgette Bardot coiffure stays together with boyish crops and James Dean’s style denim is back.
The sheer garments big time in power – we will see those by Christmas I reckon - a revival for YSL Tuxedos and the boring austerity colours, wishy-washy greys, navies, blacks, beige …etc, etc.
In the other corner we have the designers who said hell no to the austerity colours and brought in cuts from 60’s and 70’s. You will see nice neat cut dresses in animal prints as well as the usual flowers and geometric. Footwear will be similar - high bulky heels in animal prints.

For those who don’t know too much about this volatile subject, it should be noted that New York Fashion Week is nowhere near as strong, shocking or powerful in changing the course of fashion as London or Paris. The Americans are still a more conservative species then we are, in predicting the future styles. So they usually go for the safer option – elaborate the present style. Commercialism perhaps?

Ah! Did I mention that the current fashion week schedule is for RTW – Ready to Wear? So expect less craziness and more wearable styles. What you see on the catwalk this month is what will follow on the High Street. For the wacky couture designs you have to wait for the Spring round of Fashion Weeks.
What I’ve also noticed at NYFW is that men’s designers brought up colourful colours with very interesting cuts. Some are saying men have to stand out just as much as women in these austere times. Oh! Really? How about trying few Vivienne Westwood outfits then! In my books nobody has yet reached Dame VW in creativity. She is the best.

23 August, 2011: RED DRESS - BLACK DRESS FASHION SHOOT AT HAIG COLLIERY

After two weeks of postponing the date for various reasons, we finally pulled off the Red Dress: Black Dress fashion photo shoot. The biggest problem is probably pulling together people over a distance - the venue was West Cumbria, the models were from Carlisle, and of course I had to travel up from the far south of the county. Even the the scheduled start time of 9am became 10am due to train timetables. In the end we couldn't have been luckier with the day - our first choice of dates would have been a washout, while yesterday was one of the nicest days of the summer, sandwiched between days of grey skies and rain. Perhaps my luck is finally turning?

In the end Border TV couldn't send a crew, so despite having to work within a window set by train times There was no pressure, A quick coffee, a chat with the models and on with Michelle's make-up. I was more bothered about getting the make-up right, than adding a couple of final details to my new design - Ladysmith ... there was time, wasn't there? But life is never that simple, is it? Moments later Mike was asking when the first girl would be ready - the press had turned up! It was Mike McKenzie from the Whitehaven News who is putting together a feature about the plans for the new visitors centre at the Haig Pit. He already knew what he wanted as the page has been planned out, so there was time while he nosed around for suitable locations with the other photographers, Brain Sherwen and Wayne Preston. So in the end they took over and I took a sort of back seat, doing hair and make-up, finishing a dress and checking from time to time that all was going to plan.

However, any credit should go to Pamela Telford, the manager of the museum, who is an unsung hero. She may be quiet but she relentlessly fights like a tiger to preserve the heritage of Haig Pit, and the amazing tales and stories of coal mining in West Cumbria, against all odds and numerous setbacks. I think any normal person would have given up years ago, but not Pamela. The proposals to refurbish the museum and provide a visitors centre are fantastic - I sincerely hope that she is able to raise the funds as it would be a disaster if such an opportunity is lost. They have already lost the proposed railway that would have run along the cliff top, providing a link to the museum from the harbour. It was to have followed the path of the industrial line which connected the docks with Haig Pit and Ladysmith where the coal was 'washed'. Just imagine it - riding through flower-filled meadows with views over the cliffs and sea to St Bees Head, the Isle of Man and Scotland. And of course the Florence Iron Mine and hertage centre has also been lost - what a terrible waste! I went down that mine a few years ago and it certainly opened my eyes. So, that is why I organised the shoot and created these couture dresses. I wanted to offer some support in the only way I know how, and perhaps when people see the photos they will take note and perhaps see everything in a different light ... a bit of glitz and glamour at the heart of our industrial heritage! Do if you haven't been to Haig Pit, get along there now, take a look at the plans and offer your support ... and just in case you are wondering how much it costs to get in ... Nothing! You can't get better value than that. But that is no excuse for not leaving a donation.

Anyway, the day was a huge success, everybody worked hard and professionally, but also had a lot of fun. Check out the pictures here which are just a few preliminary shots taken by my hubby. Can't wait to see the professional images from Brian, Mike and Wayne. It is very difficult to pick out anybody in particular but I must so I was so impressed with both Michelle and Natasha, the models. I worked with them at Whitehaven Festival, and with Michelle also with the alternative Royal wedding shoot back in April. They are both local girls, they look fantastic, have great attitude and personality and work so well together. Even the photographers were impressed! It just shows, as I told a reporter today, you just don't realise what talent you have on your doorstep - never mond potential locations for such fantastoc shots. Anyway a huge, huge thank you to Michelle Serrechia and Natasha Lawrence, Brian Sherwen, Mike McKenzie and Wayne Preston, and of coursePamela Telford! I'll post more images in due course.
