28 November 2011: PRESS RELEASE - TOP MODEL UK 2012

Carlisle student, and model, Michelle Serrechia is one of 100 finalists that have been selected out of over 4000 entries, in five main show categories, for the prestigious Top Model UK 2012.

Michelle, who achieved a Joint BA (honours) Degree in Dance Performance and Musical Theatre at the University of Cumbria, is now studying a PGCE to teach BTEC performing arts.

“At the interview I was extremely nervous so I was over the moon when I was put through to the final,” says Michelle. “Just being selected as a finalist is beyond my dreams.”

“If I do well I hope to gain professional modelling work and a casting for London Fashion Week; but above all, I want to enjoy the experience and meet lots of new people.”

Michelle has gained experience working with local photographers and as a face for local fashion designer Angy Morton, modelling her alternative Royal wedding dress, and new collections.

“I am forever scouting for models for my avant garde designs and have found that Cumbria has fantastic potential for new talent,” says Angy who is Michelle’s official sponsor for the Grand Final of Top Model UK 2012.

“The moment I saw Michelle I realised she has potential to become a professional model; she has the right looks, style, personality and attitude, and I am confident she can go far in developing her career. I wish her every success and look forward to continuing to work with her in the future.”

Now in its sixth hugely successful year, Top Model has established itself as the leading nationwide and international professional fashion industry model search campaign and event.

The Top Model campaigns are not beauty pageants, but pride themselves on their pure model search ethos, with all of the top prizes and opportunities for the finalists and award winners being focused on the fashion and model industries.

Photo: Mike Kells

The grand finalist selections and awards are ALL decided by industry experts, not by public voting, with top couture designers and brands from around the world dressing a select number of the eventual finalists in professionally produced fully choreographed Grand Final runway shows.

The 2012 campaigns will reach their climax at the Grand Finals which will take place at the Hilton Metropole in London on 16-17 March, 2012.

20 November 2011: VIV WESTWOOD TODAY

There should be more celebrities coming forward and talking to the protesters outside London’s St Paul’s Cathedral, like Vivienne Westwood today. In many respects I think they are so right – and so is she. People feel powerless at the moment so what alternative do they have but to protest?

We are all trained and brainwashed to be consumers these days! Well not all of us...some of us are going for what we actually need rather then what we would like every five minutes ... or what the YV tells us we should have! Maybe this recession will help to remind us all of the true real values in life? Family, politeness, respect, kindness, love...the real ‘possessions’ that keep us going and make us feel alive.

What future can we give to our kids if all they can ever see and hear is celebrities and what they are wearing or what are the latest must have gadgets and gizmos. Society at all levels is saturated with ‘have’ or worse ‘want now’. Of course the financial situation doesn’t help as we now have a bigger gap between the rich and the poor; an imbalance that is now even worse than it was in the 20’s. So much for progress! That in itself is telling us we need to change. In particular, the people at the top have to change.

I recently watched the original ‘Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin’ with the wonderful Leonard Rossiterthe concept of selling 'Grot:, absolute rubbish, was hilarious. It was comedy then, a joke; but nowadays it is verging on reality! Seriously, just look around your house and count how many ‘things’ you haven’t touched or used in the last six month? How many things do we buy that actually serve no purpose other than perhaps boosting our egos? How many ‘possessions’ do we actually need to be happy? Or what do we need to makes us happy for more than 5 minutes since with all the goods and possessions in the world we’re still more miserable now than we were in the 50’s. My biggest worry is the point that Vivienne Westwood rose. ‘No art today’.

In a way I cannot feel it so much here in the Lake District as I am still surrounded by photographers, artists, arts and crafts, poets, writers, painters ... etc. However, what I found in my job is that aspiring fashion designers haven’t got that freedom anymore – they cannot come up with ideas without being influenced by other big designers or celebrities/designers. The concept of ‘be yourself’ seems to have disappeared. They seem to me that they are pushed into various boxes created by the industry and their vocabulary has a lot of ‘I must’ ‘I have to’ ...and nothing else. Even though I live in such an inspiring place, others don’t seem to realise or understand that even a simple walk can inspire me to create a new collection, rather than flicking through fashion mags all day long. References, scrap book, the inspiration board are not in ‘fashion’ anymore – how ironic – but CAD’s last version or VB’s last collection soo much ‘in’ and soo cool. Eh?

Like she said yesterday ‘We have nothing else cheap left to exploit. We are in complete danger from a lack of culture. We were all trained to be consumers ... throw away the past and the future will take care of itself, catch the latest thing and suck it up. We don’t have any art today’ AN ART LOVER IS A FREEDOM FIGHTER. She is soo right.

12 November 2011: KELLS MODELLING COMPETITION 2011

My latest adventure was the modelling competition organized by my good friends in Barrow, Mike Kells and his daughter Dawn from Kells Photography.

There were initially 27 girls, but 6 lost their nerve and backed down, so we were left with 21 aspiring models on the night. Poor things! I know how frightening it can be for them. To be out there in the spotlight, with hundreds of eyes staring at you ... panic sets in, and then its run, run!! However, even those girls that were absolutely terrified they’ve did very well. And I have to admit that I spotted a few lovely models with great potential I think. Lovely features, great pose, nice body shape and good personality. We do have good looking lasses around Cumbria ).

Modelling is about looks, knowing how to walk and how to pose, and about selling an image, but it can also be about what’s in your head and your future aspirations. There are criticisms, but as far as I am concerned what is important is empowering the girls and giving them self-confidence. Sometimes they may have struggled academically or in other walks of life, so creating a persona on a stage or for the camera, can be very important for them, in proving that they can be somebody.

Over 18 category; catwalk show with hast by Tracy Wells (TheHatBox) and lingerie by Ann Summers; introduction by Stephanioe Wood and Rachael Salmon

Of course, I was stressed myself with what these girls could wear from my own collections, especially considering I had so many boundaries. One of them was age. We had two categories under 18’s and over 18’s ... but the show was a family one so I couldn’t bring out some of my favourites such as Bubbles or School of Art – far too risqué! So, the dresses I chose for the contest couldn’t be too revealing or too short, too this or too that. A bit like, oh you are allowed to create whatever you like but actually you cannot ... this and that. How in Earth can you come up with something unusual with so many boundaries? But it was a challenge that was worth the effort and the girls did well.

Congratulations to everybody who participated on the night, and especially to the two winners, Germaine McKenzie in the over 18’s category, and Lucinda Irving in the under 18’s. I am sure you will be seeing plenty more of those two and, who knows, perhaps some of the others too. Roll on the next photo shoot!

2 November 2011: BLOWING BUBBLES!
Photoshoot with Mike Kells

Just back from a quick photoshoot with Mike Kells in hs new studio. He has been keen to do something with 'Bubbles' since we first started working together. Steph was up for a 'mohican' cut, while Kay Booth, the make-up artist was keen to practice her skills before the contest next week. As you can see it was avery worthwhile exercise. Great team ... great results as you can see!

The actual purpose of the shoot was to promote the Kells Modelling Competition 2011, as well as my new ready to wear collection ‘Austerity’. I don’t know why people are surprised to find that we have such fantastic talent nearby in Barrow-in-Furness; Mike Kells, the photographer, and Tracy Wells from Hatbox who designed the hats, for example. However, with Mike’s lens, my dresses, local, semi pro models and Tracy’s hats the results speak for themselves. Not bad, are they? Not bad at all.

29 September 2011: AUSTERITY - fashion shoot with Mike Kells

Just back from a fantastic photo shoot following a long week of intensive work to finish the first samples for my new collection, Austerity. The shoot was staged in Barrow-in-Furness where I wanted to make use of red brick to create an almost 50s or 60s backdrop – an ‘Austerity’ setting to contrast what is essentially, a vibrant, cheerful and ‘feel good’ collection, and a breath of fresh air amidst the endless gloom and doom, austerity and recession headlines we cannot escape these days! We found some excellent locations including between the bizarre tenement blocks on Barrow Island which were apparently constructed to make ship workers from Glasgow feel at home!

I have to laugh at snobbery and stereotypes from time to time. Our recent photo shoots have proved that you really don’t have to be in London to find talent, or to shoot in some lavish or exotic location, to achieve excellent results. Perhaps what is most satisfying is when somebody turns round and says – I didn’t know we could achieve that here! To which, all I can say is ‘open your eyes. It also speaks volumes of local talent and especially the professionalism I have been using recently – all of them local lasses! However, I think the biggest compliment I received this week was from a London stylist who, on discovering that Cumbria wasn’t a suburb of London, exclaimed, “So that is why your designs are so different!”

I found this shoot especially tiring which was perhaps no surprise after burning so much midnight oil. I can usually get on with work even if I am tired but it I could hardly keep my eyes open…never mind eh, it happens. The girls were as good as gold and under a watchful professional eye they gave all that could be given in a day’s work. Thanks again guys :) oh and more pics on the way :)
