CATWALK ON WATER at WHITEHAVEN FESTIVA:L

PRESS RELEASE - 14 JUNE, 2011
FASHION DESIGNER CELEBRATES WEST CUMBRIA’S INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE

Fashion designer Angy Morton will dedicate her spectacular ‘Red Dress - Black Dress’ collection to West Cumbria’s mining heritage as part of her ‘Catwalk on Water’ at Whitehaven Festival on Sunday.

Angy, best known for her avant garde creations, has used the concept of iron ore and coal, the red and black of Cumbria, as a basis for this unusual, new collection of hand-made-to-measure
dresses.

She has also drawn inspiration from specific aspects such as the 1910 Wellington Pit Disaster and the famous Montreal No.4 pit to create a selection of one-off couture designs from recycled fabrics.

“Industrial heritage isn’t regarded as a ‘sexy’ topic so I hope that, through fashion, I can engage with younger people to raise awareness of how much we owe to its legacy in this region,” says Angy.

Pamela Telford, manager of Haig Colliery Mining Museum, says "This is a fabulous way to celebrate the industrial history of the area. Angy has captured in such a unique way the essence and influence of mining through her creativity."

“An estimated 1,700 men, women and children lost their lives winning coal in the Whitehaven area, plus up to one in ten iron ore miners. These people should never be forgotten”.

“We have already lost the Florence Mine Heritage Centre so it is more important than ever we support the project for a Colourful Coast Visitors Centre at Haig Colliery Mining Museum as a lasting memory.”

Haig Colliery Mining Museum will be represented on the harbour side and will also have the plans for the new visitor centre on display for any comments and questions. Haig Museum will also be open all of the festival weekend, with the winding engine running for visitors. Entry is free.

Red Dress - Black Dress will be a spectacular finale to three catwalk shows which will also showcase Angy’s Pyromania and infamous Stolen Dreams, fusion of fashion and football collections.

Angy also draws attention to the high degree of talent and creativity in Cumbria, by using local models, hair and make-up artists and photographers for her ‘Catwalk on Water’ shows.

PRESS RELEASE
13 April, 2011

FASHION DESIGNER CREATES ‘ORDINARY GIRL’ ROYAL WEDDING

Avant-garde fashion designer, Angy Morton, has organised an unusual fashion shoot to pose the question, “What if the heir to the throne had really chosen an ‘ordinary’ girl to be his bride?”
Angy says. “We constantly hear that Prince William is marrying an ‘ordinary girl’, but Kate Middleton isn’t exactly Miss Average, is she?”

“My bride will be an ‘ordinary’ girl, from a modest background and upbringing on a council estate. She will be independent, free of inhibitions, and unafraid to express her own creativity and style.”
The fashion shoot will revolve around a series of cameos, from the bride leaving home, catching the bus to church, and eating fish and chips, to her honeymoon on the edge of the glorious Lake District.

It will take place in and around Whitehaven, and will also showcase Angy’s alternative Royal wedding dress, a design which strikes a balance between tradition and innovation.

“Expectation is that Kate’s dress will be created by a British designer, but it is likely to be more conservative than cutting edge. She has already been criticised for her lack of style by Dame Vivienne Westwood, and will be further constrained by the rules of her traditional upbringing.”

Angy also draws attention to the high level of talent and creativity in Cumbria by using aspiring local models, make-up artists and photographers, and to the superb backdrop for the shoot, an ideal setting for weddings and honeymoons.

'Like the future princess the Western Lake District is far from ordinary,” says Katie Read of West Cumbria Tourism, “It has breathtaking beauty in its coast, hidden depths in Wastwater, Britain’s favourite view, the regal heights of Scafell, and a welcome fit for a king'

BLAZING A TRAIL ON THE CATWALK FOR TEENAGE CANCER

Fashion Designer Angy Morton will be setting fire to a couture dress on Monday, ahead of the public launch of her Pyromania collection to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Unit at Newcastle’s RVI.

“I cannot exhibit the dress in question so I will burn it and use the charred remains on the catwalk. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes,” said Angy, “it represents Pyromania but symbolises hope!”

“If you have an artistic talent, you can use it for the benefit of others. You don't need to have pots of money. We are all busy, but we can all find time to help in our own way.”

“I want to dedicate this dress to the fight against cancer. It never asks who you are, what you are and why, it just strikes, and touches all of us. To see it in young people is especially painful.”

Angy’s scorched dress and Pyromania collection will be exhibited on 4 November, 2010 as part of an evening of fashion and fun in Newcastle, organised by A M Models, in support of the Toma Fund.

The Toma Fund was set up to continue the work of a brave and inspirational teenager, Jordan Thompson, who succumbed to cancer, by providing hope, and support for others in his situation.

Exclusive prizes will be auctioned for the charity including signed NUFC shirts, and a professional modelling course, while Angy will donate her time to create a unique, bespoke jacket out of signed Falcons rugby jerseys for the highest bidder.

There will also be classic lingerie from Ann Summers, menswear from Edo modelled by Newcastle Falcons and Newcastle United players, music from local bands and stalls for Christmas shopping.

However, the real highlight for Angy will be when kids from the Teenage Cancer Unit take to the catwalk to model some of her football fan wear designs.

PRESS RELEASE
13 September, 2010

FOOTBALL FAN WEAR at LONDON FASHION WEEK

Avant-garde designer Angy Morton will be unveiling a unique collection of designer, football fan wear, including some samples created for West Ham United, at Fashion Mavericks during London Fashion Week, this Saturday, 18 September, 2010.

Angy first made headlines when she ripped up her Newcastle United strip and created a wedding dress in protest at Kevin Keegan’s departure from the club two years ago.

However, it is her more recent Stolen Dreams couture collection, an eclectic fusion of fashion and football, l that has provided the inspiration for her latest project.

“When I created Stolen Dreams I realized there was a lack of quality fashion for female fans,” Angy said, pointing to the rhinestone hoodies and casual sportswear in many club shops.

“Girls were always complaining that all they had to show their support for their club was an unflattering replica shirt so I decided to create something completely different that could be worn not only at the match, but also for an evening out.”

“Recent Premier League statistics show that nearly one in five adults passing through the turnstiles is female. However, I have found many clubs reluctant to try something new or radical for the girls, relying instead on the huge sales guaranteed from men’s replica shirts.”

There are notable exceptions such as West Ham United who have expressed an interest in trying limited lines of designer fashion following their success with the basque worn by Katy Perry last year.

Angy’s fan wear samples will take to the catwalk with a selection of ‘Stolen Dreams’ favourites, and her new ‘Pyromania’ collection of limited edition, hand-made to order, and ready-to-wear designs.

PRESS RELEASE AND PHOTOCALL

DESIGNER KICKS OFF WITH FOOTBALL FASHION…

A fashion designer who is defying a red card ban from some of the country’s top soccer clubs will be unveiling her football inspired collection in the North East next week.

Avante garde designer Angy Morton has created a whole range of fantasy evening wear using the soccer strips of some of the UK’s top teams.
And while some have given her the go-ahead to show her collection, others have forbidden her to use their branding and logo.
But Angy, from Cumbria, is determined to show her “Stolen Dreams” dresses as planned and will unveil them at a catwalk event being held at Newcastle’s Eldon Gardens on Thursday (November 12).
“Stolen Dreams is a unique fusion of fashion and football which has been inspired by the ups and downs of top flight football,” she said.
“This is an artistic collection. All of my outfits are unique, one-off designs created to raise my profile as a new designer and awareness of my rather unusual creativity.
“They are not intended for sale.”
North East teams such as Sunderland and Newcastle have given Angy their blessing as have leading sportswear manufacturers Umbro but she’s had a resounding no from Chelsea and Liverpool who have said she can’t use their logo or trademark – despite the fact that the dresses are not for sale.
But Angy has come up with a unique way to beat the ban – and now intends to make some minor alterations to ensure these one-off pieces can take to the catwalk.
