2 November, 2012: BURNT ICE

I have been working on a rather special project to create a couture dress for a friend from Sun FM, She is attending th Sun FM 'Fire & Ice' Ball in the Minster at Sunderland this evening so hoping all fits!!!

Yes, I have noticed it's not black and white so perhaps I need to watch my back! Looking forward to seeing the photos asI have been burning thr midnight all week with it. Meanwhile, here are a few designs to keep you guessing.

10 October, 2012: MANUFACTURING IN THE UK

Manufacturing is back in the headlines this week with the BAE-EADS merger that’s been cancelled. I can hear a lot of relief around the country – not another key manufacturer going overseas, and more job cuts, seems to have been the concern of many. I also know you will ask, what’s the connection between fashion and BAE? It’s manufacturing, of course.

At the time that all the costs are going higher and higher we’ve seen an increase in almost everything and now, after such a poor summer, it is expected that fruit and veggie prices will rise too. But what I’ve recently noticed, with great interest, is an increase in references to ‘manufacturing’, especially with regards to fashion. Even though an overall decrease in manufacturing output in the UK was reported last month, manufacturing of clothing and textiles is on the increase. The few remaining factories in UK are bulging with orders and are at their busiest since the 90’s. The potential is certainly there, though it is overlooked because it is overshadowed by the big names that need to cut costs to keep afloat. However the feeling is there … so to come clean, one of my long-standing dreams - I know my hubby will kick my backside now because I always say I do not have dreams so perhaps I should say aspirations? - is to establish a small workshop based here in Cumbria with Cumbrian lads and lasses (is that EU political correctness?) that produces the best quality gowns in the world. Very ambitious, isn’t it?

What brought all this up you may ask? The plans were there for ages, but after Mary Portas ‘Kinky Knickers’ programme on Channel Four a few months ago, I have decided to take the bull by the horns and give it a shot. I have a lot of ideas so watch this space! I may call you for a sewing test.

2 October, 2012: BE YOUR OWN BOSS (BBC3)

Yes, I know, but I kind of like ‘Be your own boss’ on BBC Three. Not entirely though. I certainly don’t like the sell, sell, sell on a big scale culture, but that’s just me. What I do like is to see that some small businesses get the support they need.

Well if you have ever considered setting up your own business, take a look at the programme - it will definitely open your eyes. The story goes like this: Richard Reed – the owner of Innocent drinks – is looking to invest in a British small business. , he invites budding entrepreneurs to pitch their stuff. Based on the pitch and product, he selects three; offers them money and six weeks to get up and running or to improve if they are already established. After six weeks and a thorough review, he then decides if the team/business deserves big time investment or not. Sounds good doesn’t it? But it’s not that easy. You have to prove that your idea is commercially viable, provide a good business plan as well as focusing on sell, sell, sell. Some will succeed some will fail. Richard Branson said quite frankly the majority of business that start from scratch without any investment will fail. Very few will get to the top. No hope for me then Richard …

The programme runs every Wed night and it’s quite interesting to see how much creativity lurks around. It is quite amusing to see people’s ideas. You could say ‘The good, the bad, the ugly and the downright hilarious’. My favourite answer between from a prospective small business, was when Richard Reed asked what would be the first thing you would do if I would give you 25 grand. The answer ‘We would hire a business consultant!’

30 September, 2012: WEDDING FASHION

I just read an article in the Guardian written by Hadley Herman about the ‘understated’ Wedding Fashion. In plain English all female guests look like somebody’s frumpy aunt. Eh? Sorry? So what happens with looking stylish and beautiful? What happens if you look like a frumpy aunt and Mr Right is just in front of you? No no no definitely NOT. Considering that we are dressing more and more in ‘frumpy’ outfit’s day in day out surely a wedding is the right excuse to make the effort, dress up and look stunning.

Yes we know there are mum’s out there that want to outdo the bride but that’s nothing to do with the guests… even the frumpy aunts. We have all seen Monster- in – Law, haven’t we? So forget about the frumpiness and go full steam ahead. Be Gorgeous. Be Stunning. Be you.

17 September, 2012: LFW: SPRING-SUMMER 2013

So what have we got this year for next year? After Stella McCartney’s optical illusion dress, that was worn and worn again by the big and small in the world of celebrity. I’m not so sure what will be next in vogue. It all depends on who’s going to wear what, and when. Anyway to go back to LFW, the selection for next year will be 70’s cuts in orange, brown, green and navy, with the famous big patterns, as well as simple cuts in beige, ivory, cream and, yet again…brown. So maxi flowery dresses, combined with jackets, and tight denim with bright green platforms.

However, fashion is a fickle thing and every designer that show-cases their collection has a vision/theme; if you don’t fit just move on to the next one. This country offers so much creativity it’s impossible not to find somebody or something you may like providing you go for the small designers as well as the big once. My small argument is that if you think back to the 20’, 30’s or any other decade until the 90’s you could actually pinpoint the decade based on the clothes worn, but I don’t seem to find the same after the millennium. I suppose the dot – com has changed all that.

9 September, 2012: IS MINNIE MOUSE TOO FAT?

I don’t think it is right to talk about Christmas in August do you? Some people (well, those who actually saw the sun this summer) haven’t yet finished with their barbeques so it really we can’t bring the Christmas tree out yet.

BUT in our fast world we do and fashion retailers are gearing up for the ‘launch’. September is usually the fashion month with LFW and new lines, new garments popping here there and everywhere…I fully understand but Christmas? NO please not yet.

But let’s get back to our story… Barneys new campaign, the headlines read ‘Minnie Mouse gets a makeover for the Barneys Christmas campaign’. The makeover we’re talking about it that Minnie Mouse is suddenly without her bow or polka dress but she is a SIZE ZERO and dressed in designer gear. Hey, you mean nothing is sacred, so now they start with classic children’s’ cartoons? What would Walt Disney say about this?

I’m sorry but what message are they actually sending to the kids here? They get confused not to mention the size zero issue. And it’s not only Minnie Mouse but Daisy Duck and Goofy as well. I wonder what will be next - an anorexic Snow White or a trimmed down Pinocchio? Oh sorry he is already a size zero just needs the Valentino, or Dolce and Gabbana gear
…anyway see more here:
Disney Characters get a Makeover.

No it's not a fake - just a summer visitor to our living room! - a Long-eared Bat - and no he didn't stay over, he was freed as quickly as possible!

20 August, 2012: BALANCING ACT

I
’m lucky to know so many good creative people in the fashion industry that have done a fab job in keeping me in the loop for the last nine months.

I never realised – even though I was told so many times – how difficult it is to combine and juggle motherhood with work. I know they are now saying it’s not good to multitask but sometimes it’s necessary. I have also discovered how important it is to have good friends around you that can help now and then as well as a family … well if you can get along that is, otherwise best kept at a safe distance. Anyway enough of moaning because at the end of the day it’s all good fun, and having my little boy around is really worth every bit of effort.

I have no new collection just yet, only ideas and ideas, and more ideas (so watch this space). As you can expect, I’m working at catching up with all fashion and social networks…as well as selling. I know there is fierce competition out there but I believe in my product and I am confident that my services are of the highest standard, not to mention being different, unusual, stylish and unique. That was proved to me over and over again especially over the last 9 months since I have been approached by so many photographer, models, fashion stylists, event organizers..etc , wishing to work with me.

Following from the Top Model UK competition my latest project is working with TCA couture. Actually they’ve done all the hard work - I just sent them a selection of my dresses. The pics are fantastic. Good set design, good models, good make-up artist and good …Ahem! Designers oh and a v good photographer ). So well done Theresa, Ciara, Ray and models sorry don’t know all your names )

April in Cumbria! Mike Morton

April, 2012: CHEAP! CHEAP! CHEAP!

Note: I originally wrote this blog last November but lost in the mayhem that ensued when Oscar made his grand entry!

Do you know what annoys a designer more than plagiarism? Somebody, selling their design or ideas …and what is even more annoying is that various papers and tabloids promote it as fantastic- especially when they announce that you can now buy something unusual and unique for a pittance!

In other words it is not important how much time that designer spent in creating/producing and finally marketing the line/outfit, just the final cost. I know and understand, especially in today’s financial world that we all have to be careful with our pennies but honestly…this isn’t a today or even a yesterday issue. What is a today or yesterday issue is the fact that more and more retailers are copying lines and outfits bluntly without paying a penny to the designers. They usually blame it on designers themselves for ‘ruling’ the style, or the look or even the colour.

The unwritten rule is that a designer can sell their own designs to fashion retailers either for a one off fee or a freelance fee for that particular design. However some retailers are pushing the boundaries and are doing the selling and copying before even approaching the designer…just to see how far they can go. They never think, or respect, how many hours and days go into creating a collection, never mind the financial outlay. Well if you are a big designer and can afford it yes but still it is annoying as hell.

We should definitely have some kind of protection when it comes to designing clothes, otherwise what is the point of using your creativity if somebody is only going to steal your ideas. You have no way of protecting your work once it’s out. Cheap versions quickly appear like no tomorrow. I know it has been going on for the last 100 years or more … but even today you still cannot rely on being unique unless you keep your ideas all under the lock and key.

And even that is not a sure way of protecting your creations. Just a few days ago a designer had his full collection stolen. Mark Jacobs 46-look collection vanished before anybody had seen it.

27 March, 2012: BALANCING ACT

For the last two weeks I’ve been glued to the telly every Thursday 9:00pm to see Mary’s Bottom Line. The story is brilliant and not only that but the facts are brought into the light – one hopes that people shopping in cheap places see this. When you do your clothes shopping next think very carefully who is the actual beneficiary, your country/economy or China. I have nothing against China but think about it carefully: for the last 20 years they have created a good manufacturing industry, indeed almost everything made in this world is made there. Are they going to buy us out? Yes unless we do nothing about it.

A whopping 90% of clothes are made outside the UK, Textile Manufacturing jobs lost 52% since 2000 and £98bilion more imports then exports. That gives you an idea how much our country lost. What have we got left? By the look of it and in the way the Conservatives are going, not much. NHS is next, forests and roads. How about Air can they sell that as well? So because of all this Mary Portas’s idea to open a manufacturer in Middleton – nothing to do with Catherine I hope )) – near Manchester is more then welcome. Her idea is to create 100% British luxury knickers.

Competition is huge from Ultimo to Agent Provocateur so it is not that easy… however they are made in the Far East and with her contacts I’m sure selling will not be a problem. Lace made in Nottingham by lace maker Jim Stacey. Amazingly this chap invested all his money in the last lace machinery with the view that one day British lace will be in demand once again and he will be able to make a living out of it. Incredibly he was living in a boat near his small warehouse. What a story considering that everything in manufacturing is gone since the 90’s since the cheap imports. What nobody mentioned yet is wear they getting the thread from … anyway I really like the program and her sense of humour )).

Series Summary: Britain used to be a manufacturing colossus, renowned for its world-class clothing industry. But today, most fashion is made cheaply abroad. Mary Portas wants to reignite the UK clothing industry by starting her own production line to manufacture a key staple in any woman's wardrobe: 100% British knickers.
The product Kinky Knickers priced at £10.00 sold from Boots to Liberty to House of Fraser. Product design -love it.

20 March, 2012: TOP MODEL UK - FINALE

My life is not all baby this and baby that and the latest news is that Michelle Serrechia - if you remember she was going to the Top Model UK competition in London – had the finale this weekend. And because I couldn’t go I asked a London fashion stylist, Crystal Deroche and her marketing director, Maame to represent me as I was sponsoring Michelle. I worked with Crystal last year on a fashion shoot.

Unfortunately Michelle didn’t win but she has been selected by few designers for London Fashion Week which isn’t bad . I really hope she enjoyed herself as she put so much work and effort, and money, into going back and forth to London for this to happen.

Michelle also received good coverage in Carlisle living, News and Star and was interviewed by BBC Radio Cumbria. So WELL DONE MICHELLE – you were brilliant!

10 March, 2012: MY OSCAR

Don’t ask! Don’t ask were I have been until now and why I haven’t written anything for four whole months.

Well to start with I became a mother for the first time at the end of November so you can say that I have been rather pre-occupied, and on a very BIG learning curve. Oscar decided to make an appearance 6 weeks early so in addition to finding myself with a baby brain () there was also a degree of stress as I stayed in hospital with him for the first few weeks of his life. So, please forgive me if you find me gooing and cooing – I’m told this phase will only last ten years so I’m sure you can bear with me! So, at the moment my life revolves around little Oscar... and yes I miss designing and making clothes but to be honest after cuddling, feeding, changing dirty nappies, and playing with Oscar, washing his little romper suits, cleaning his bottles, grabbing something to eat (if I’m lucky), and perhaps tidying the house a bit, I have no energy left oh and by the time I manage a cup of coffee you can bet it will be a. cold, and b. only half-finished – for then there will be a noise in the pram announcing ‘I’m hungry!!! I’m hungry!!! Mummy daddy food! NOW!!’ …so you start all over again. And I’m not alone – daddy is a hand too - and still I feel exhausted.

I’m lucky, I’ve been told as my hubby is a natural. Not a lot of dads out there are so hands on with their babies apparently…well I don’t know any other to be honest because all our friends that are dads are very much involved in caring and looking after their own little ones. Anyway, he does the washing up, cooking, working big time – very busy at the moment – as well as caring for Oscar, cuddling, playing and – this is very important, watching Thomas the Tank Engine together ).. But above all Michael lets me SLEEP for few extra hours during the night. Even though he lives on two or three hours sleep per night himself. Oh it feels so good. I never believed that I would appreciate just ten minutes or half an hour. Before we had Oscar I never ever bothered to go to bed for a quick half an hour snooze. It would have seemed a complete waste of time. I always believed that you wake up far more tired than when you go to bed. How wrong I was. But then again it depends on how tired you really are, I suppose. If all you have managed is three to four hours sleep per night for the last few months, then any minute extra is precious. I do try to leave the chores alone and sleep when baby sleeps but it is not easy because Oscar either snores or grunts) – it is like living in a farm yard, and I need complete silence to be able to sleep. Aren’t we funny. :-)))

I am amazed how we find the energy to keep going; the only explanation I have is Oscar’s beautiful smile. He is our ‘Red Bull’. A big smile brings tears to my eyes, weak knees and a mushy brain. What I’m also amazed about, is how two intelligent people run around like headless chicken to please a small creature that shouts and screams the house down. How you drop everything you do no matter what, to care, comfort, secure and love that little miracle. How you change, and your priorities change, how you take notice of things you brushed off like dust before, how you smile and laugh continuously until your cheeks hurt every day. How you worry if his nappy is empty, or if it is too full. Nature is a mysterious creature. And you know what it’s worth it … it is hard work but it is worth every stitch, every pain, and every headache and back pain I had and if it I am to do it again I would without thinking twice. Having children opens your eyes to life – it really is like being born again! And I never expected I would say that!
